2005 Movies
Serendipitously for movie lovers, there was an extensive variety of 2005 movies released. An extensive variety of genres including Horror films, Westerns, Drama films, Comedy, Documentaries and Animated movies were newly released. Out of all of the new movies released, a mere five were selected as nominees for the Academy of Motion Pictures best picture award. The films selected to receive such a huge honor were “Capote”, “Crash”, “Brokeback Mountain”, “Munich”, and “Good Night and Good Luck”. Here is my list of the best movies of 2005.
Capote
“Capote”, told the story of American writer Truman Capote, the author of bestselling novel and film, “In Cold Blood”. Truman Capote actually traveled to the Kansas town where the 4 members of the Clutter family were brutally murdered and developed a friendship with one of two serial killers who were sentenced to death. The film which was directed by Bennett Miller, starred Philip Seymor Hoffman and Catherine Keener and was produced by Caroline Baron, Vince Ohoven, William Ohoven and Michael Ohoven. “In Cold Blood” was nominated for 4 Academy Awards. “Capote” is without question one of the best 2005 movies.
Crash
Another of the 2005 movies nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture was “Crash”. The movie explores racism in its subtlest forms and shows how it affects our aspect of life. The film was directed by Paul Haggis and stars Sandra Bullock, Ryan Philippe, Don Cheadle, Terrance Howard, Thandie Netwon and Matt Dillon. “Crash” was produced by Cathy Schulman.
Brokeback Mountain
The most shocking of the 2005 movies, “Brokeback Mountain”, is about two male cattle herders from Wyoming who develop then act upon their romantic feelings for one another. Because of the era and the place that they live, their relationship must stay a secret or their lives will be destroyed. The film was directed by Ang Lee starring the late Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams and produced by Dina Ossana and James Schamus.
Munich
“Munich” is but another of the 2005 movies nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. “Munich” is about the tragic murder of the Israeli athletes during the 1972 Munich Olympics and the Israeli retaliation that followed. This historical and very powerful film was once considered to be the underdog for the year by film critics. “Munich” stars Daniel Craig, Eric Bana and Ciaran Hinds.
Good Night and Good Luck
Another one of the best movies of 2005, “Good Night and Good Luck” takes place during the Senator McCarthy era. It is about the news reporters who were exploring how Senator McCarthy was using America’s great fear of Communism to his advantage. This 2005 film was directed by and stars George Clooney. Also starring with George Clooney are, Patricia Clarkson, David Strathaim and Jeff Daniels. “Good Night and Good Luck” was produced by Grant Heslov.
And This Year’s Winner For Best Picture Is…
Out of all of the best 2005 movies on my list, “Crash” would end up winning the Oscar for best picture. The award winning film reached a great many people with its take on racism during modern times. The film’s screenplay is rumored to have been written in a mere three days by Paul Haggis and its soundtrack was splendidly received. “Crash” would also win the Oscar for best film editing as well as for best original screenplay.
This group of 2005 movies that was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture was well received and quite diverse.
