An Important Acoustic Guitar Lesson: Use A Pick Or Not?

Learning to play the acoustic guitar is a wonderful idea and one that everyone should at least consider.  Whether you’re a child or adult and regardless of whether you have previous experience with a musical instrument or not, you can learn to play the acoustic guitar in no time at all.

There are a few steps you’ll have to take if you want to be an expert acoustic guitar playing.  There are different tips and strategies you will learn with these acoustic guitar lessons, including on using a pick and in which cases this is most suitable.

To pick or not to pick is really the question, one that a lot of people just aren’t able to make on their own.  It all depends on what type of guitar playing you’re interested in.  It really depends on what sort of guitar playing you want to do.

If you want to play flamenco music for instance, you should avoid using a pick as it will create a deeper sound that is not suitable for this style of music. In almost all cases for fast leads and scales a pick must be used, as this fast of playing can be harsh on the fingertips and possibly even cause them to bleed.

You’re basically more limited if you’re not using a pick.  In the basic acoustic guitar lesson your teacher will show you how to play the guitar using a pick, because a good teacher wants their student to have as many options as possible.

In the basic acoustic guitar lesson a pick will be used. Strumming slow acoustic songs is fine without a pick.  If you decide that you do want to use a pick for your acoustic guitar lesson, it’s important to consider the size and shape of a pick before buying.

Picks come in a variety of sizes and styles.  Plastic, nylon and tortex are the most common materials for a pick to be made of. The size is also important and the smaller a pick you choose the lighter sound you can play with your guitar.  The smaller pick you use the lighter a sound you will get.  It really all depends on the guitarist and their own personal preference.

This is just one acoustic guitar lesson and there are many others you need to learn before mastering the guitar including how to hold the guitar, how to tune the guitar and how to strum.
