Sanjaya: American Idol Audition Contestant
With the large amount of superbly talented performers appearing on American Idol - Season 6, many of American Idols viewing audience wondered just how did American Idol contestant, Sanjaya manage to hang in there for as long as he did. The reason Sanjaya lasted as long as he did is not because the lad has tons of talent (he did) or the fact that the young American Idol contestant Sanjaya could sing (he could). No, the main reason Sanjaya lasted as long as he did is because is because he was an oddity, he was cute and he made us laugh. American Idol fans are still wondering if Sanjaya sabotaged his own chances to win on purpose or if his weirdness was a winning tactic that did not work.
In the beginning of the finals, American Idol contestant Sanjaya gave it his all and performed like he wanted to win. The audience enjoyed watching him and the judges praised Sanjaya because he could sing and perform, and that lasted for quite awhile. Then, it seemed that Sanjaya simply was not interested in winning anymore. Sanjaya’s odd change began early in the American Idol finals and only escalated from there. Sanjaya hairstyles and outfits started to become more and more outrageous, so much so that it became apparent that the audience watched him more for his oddities and less for his singing ability. It didn’t take long before American Idol contestant Sanjaya was considered by many fans to be the joke of of the show. Sadly, Sanjaya will be remembered far longer than many American Idol winners.
If you added together all of the American Idol fans who tuned in to watch if Sanjaya would pull off any of his crazy antics with all of the people who watched in hopes of hearing him sing like he did in the earlier American Idol episodes, it added up to an enormous ratings boost for the American Idol TV show. Surprisingly, Sanjaya managed to last for quite a long time on the show before he was finally voted off.
It goes without question that the young American Idol contestant could sing. But, it got to the point where the audience began watching Sanjaya performances more and more for his crazy hair styles, song selections and wardrobes and less about his singing. Added to that were his little quips back and forth with the American Idol judges, especially Simon, and you can see why the audience wanted to keep Sanjaya around.
Without question, his biggest fan base came from teenage girls. His bad boy charm coupled with his approachability made Sanjaya very appealing to young girls and it was more that obvious that he enjoyed the attention. Whatever it was that changed Sanjaya’s mind about winning American Idol, it certainly was entertaining watching him last as long as he did.
For now, I’ll continue to watch American Idol TV shows so I can enjoy all of the new found talented singers the show keeps discovering, but in the back of my mind I am hoping they discover the next American Idol contestant like Sanjaya for us to enjoy. That was a fun ride for all of us!
