The Best Christmas Movies Of All Time
Every holiday Christmas Movies come out on the big screen or visit our television sets in order to help to create a fun holiday atmosphere as well as to teach us a moral lesson or two regarding Christmas and how we treat our fellow human beings. Although most of us find the multitude of Christmas films that are released to be most enjoyable, there are some Christmas Movies that remain our personal favorites. Here is a list of some of the best Christmas movies of all time. At the end of this article where I have put a link where you can get free Christmas movie downloads.
“It's A Wonderful Life” starring the talented actor Jimmy Stewart, is a wonderful story about the worthiness and hope of all of us. It is about the story of a man experiencing self doubt and despair and is on the road to self destruction because he believes his life to be of little or no worth to those he loves and to those around him. He believes they would be better off if he were dead and never existed at all. Just as he is about to end it all, an angel saves him then grants him what he desires most. The angel allows him to see what the world around him would be like if he never existed at all.
“A Christmas Story” is a humorous Christmas movie told from the viewpoint of a little boy in the days leading up to Christmas and on Christmas Day. It reminds many of us of what the Christmas season was like when we were growing up, what with all the decorated store front windows, the snow and frostiness, Santa Claus, and of course our desire to get a certain, special Christmas toy. In A Christmas Story, the boy wished for a special Red Rider BB gun, but like most parents would do, they disapproved of his choice in Christmas gifts. The film did a great job in reminding us of the innocence of the Christmas season in the past.
“A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens is a Christmas movie classic that will probably be shown for countless Christmas seasons to come. It is about the story of the old miser Ebenezer Scrooge whose sole purpose in life is to make and horde as much money as he possibly can. Scrooge puts making money above everything else in his miserable life, and that includes family, friends and anyone who is foolish enough to care about him. “Bah Humbug” is his only response to anyone who wishes him a merry Christmas. Things begin to change for old Scrooge when 3 Christmas ghosts visit him in an attempt to point out the error of his uncaring ways. A Christmas Carol’s strong message is about the importance of caring for all of the people in our life.
"Scrooged" is a very funny comic version of the Christmas movie classic A Christmas Carol. None of the other Christmas movies can come close to the amount of times A Christmas Carol has been remade, and I am not even counting Bill Murray’s “Scrooged” among them, although “Scrooged” is most definetly A Christmas Carol remake. Bill Murray portrays a bitter uncaring TV executive who is visited by three Christmas ghosts. Like everything else he has done, Bill Murray puts his own distinct hilarious comedy into Scrooged. Disney’s latest rendition of A Christmas Carol is outstanding.
“A Miracle on 34th Street” is an outstanding Christmas movie that can be seen on television each and every Christmas. In fact, the 1947 black and white movie starring Edmund Gwenn, Maureen O’hara, John Payne and introduced Natalie Wood is my all time favorite Christmas film. It asks and answers the question just about every child asks their parents at Christmas time, “Is there really a Santa Claus?” The movie is about a kindly old man with a flowing white beard who claims to be none other than the real Kris Kringle, or Santa Claus. But there are others out to prove otherwise. This great Christmas movie is about the true meaning of Christmas vs. the holiday’s commercialization.
“National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation” is one of the funnier Christmas films made. It is about the Griswold family’s Christmas with Chevy Chase portraying Clark Griswold. As Clark awaits his much needed Christmas bonus to arrive in the mail, everything about his families Christmas just keeps going hysterically wrong. The movie shows the lives of the Griswold family as they attempt to celebrate Christmas with a houseful of invited relatives along with an RV full of some uninvited ones. Along with being very funny, Christmas Vacation has some great Christmas songs in it.
“Home Alone” with Joe Pesci and Macaulay Culkin is another very funny Christmas movie about a very large and very chaotic family loaded with relatives and kids who are about to leave town on a family Christmas vacation. Amid the chaos that pursues after the alarm clock fails to go off, leaving them very little time in getting to the airport to catch their plane, one of the children, a resourceful and spirited boy named Kevin, is inadvertently left behind to fend for himself all alone at home during the Christmas holiday. At first, Kevin loved the idea of being home alone without other family members to bug him. But, when a pair of thieves known as “The Wet Bandits” tries to break in, Kevin soon wishes he had his family back. To stop the thieves from breaking in, Kevin devises some amazingly creative traps. You will not stop laughing as trap after trap is set off by the startled bandits. The Home Alone Christmas movie shows how important family and loved ones are to us.
“Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” the sequel to Home Alone is about the following Christmas were despite all of Kevin’s parents plans to keep all of the family together for their Christmas vacation to Miami, Florida, Kevin somehow finds himself all alone on a plane to New York City. Kevin luckily is holding on to his fathers wallet that holds the address his aunt and uncle's home, but finds it vacant and under renovation when he gets there. To make matters worse, he runs into the same two thieves who now call themselves “The Sticky Bandits” and when they see Kevin, they want only revenge. The Home Alone 2 Christmas movie brings us a bunch of new traps along with many more laughs.
“How The Grinch Stole Christmas” is a Dr. Seuss story that was made into a popular family Christmas movie. It was originally made as an animated film for television but since then actor and comedian Jim Carey has starred in a wonderful motion picture version. The Grinch is a scrooge-like, grouchy, green man who lives with his faithful dog in the mountains above Whoville. Whoville is a small town whose inhabitants are are aptly called the Whos. The thing that irks the Grinch the most is the fact that year after year the Whos celebrate Christmas much too enthusiastically for his taste. The Grinch who hates Christmas will stop at nothing to spoil it for Whoville and so he devises a plan to steal all the toys, gifts and food that The Whos have accumulated for their Christmas celebration. How the Grinch Stole Christmas provides a valuable lesson on the true meaning of Christmas.
“A Charlie Brown Christmas” is an animated television Christmas movie about the characters from popular comic strip called Peanuts. Charlie Brown, the comic strip's main character, narrates as he and his friends celebrate Christmas. A Charlie Brown Christmas movie has Biblical references that relates to what the true meaning of Christmas is all about.
“Frosty The Snowman” is an animated story based on the popular song about a snowman, named Frosty, who comes to life on Christmas day and who must avoid a greedy musician who is trying to get the magic that brought Frosty to life. The movie is full of fun and has lots of fantastic Christmas songs. The late actor and comedian Jimmy Durante sang the popular hit tune that Frosty The Snowman was based on and Jimmy Durante also narrates this great children’s classic Christmas film. Several Christmas movies were made about the exploits of Frosty The Snowman.
“Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” is another wonderful children’s animated Christmas movie that is based on a popular Christmas song. It is about a reindeer with a very shiny nose who was shunned by the other reindeer until Santa needed him to guide his sleigh through some very bad weather on Christmas Eve. In the movie, Rudolf and Herbie the Elf have several adventures that children are sure to enjoy. Several Christmas movies were made about Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. The popular singing cowboy Gene Autry sang the hit title tune that the movie was based on.
