Music, movies and ringtones are all covered on a Billboard. The Billboard magazine was launched in 1884. It was in 1914 that the magazine built-in the very first chart. Also included was the countdown of popular songs that had been heard in Vaudeville theaters.
It was in 1930 that Jukebox was then invented and Billboard started to chart popular music. Billboard created a new magazine feature in 1936 which was referred to as “Chart Line”. The most frequently played songs on the radio networks were listed in the “Chart Line”. By the year 1940, it gradually began including the Best Selling Record Charts. Therefore, the Billboard began its journey into charting music.
Billboard continues in the music industry even today. Billboard.com is accessed by a staggering 4.1 million people each month. Their radio programs, American Country Countdown and American Top 40 broadcast the results of both national and international music charts.
There are also numerous Country Music charts in the Billboard including:
- Hot Country Songs - the popularity of this music chart is calculated by weekly airplay and sales numbers.
- Top Country Recurrents - songs that have continuously remained for 20 weeks in the Hot County songs chart and slipped down to No. 50 are played here.
The Billboard has successfully established many artists, albums and songs; the maximum number of hits coming from George Jones. Credit should be given to the late singer Eddy Arnold who held the most top 10 singles.
The following three songs - Hank Snow's “I'm Moving On”, Eddy Arnold's “I'll Hold You In My Heart” and Webb Pierce “In The Jailhouse” have remained at the No. 1 spot for the longest period of time, which is 21 weeks.
Billboard currently uses the Nielsen Soundscan system to track the sales of albums, DVD's, videos and singles. This system notifies Billboard each time a purchase is made at registered Soundscan stores. Broadcast Data systems is also used by Billboard to follow radio airplay. At the end of every week these detections are totaled, which helps to determine airplay points.
All Billboard music charts use this formula. The chart is separated on the basis of stations and stores that are used by each chart. This is because each musical genre has a retail group or core audience. There is a chart manager for each department at Billboard and they make the necessary decisions once all verifications have been made.
Billboard 200 and Hot 100 are the most popular of all the Billboard music charts. There are also music charts that cover various styles of music, such as:
