Blues Brothers DVD & Soundtrack
The Blues Brothers is not just a cult comedy movie followed only by John Belushi fans, but it is also a great musical that blends rock n’ roll, the blues and old time soul music. Throw in some classic car chases along with the charismatic comedy of both Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi and you have The Blues Brothers DVD. There has been a plethora of imitators over the years, but as yet, no one has come close to making anything like the The Blues Brothers movie. Devoted fans have been collecting Blues Brothers DVD’s over the years and why not, there are plenty of versions to choose from.
The John Landis directed Blues Brothers film was released in 1980 with Dan Aykroyd (Elwood Blues) and the late John Belushi (Jake Blues) starring as the two main characters. The Blues Brothers DVD begins with Jake attempting to reform his old band after his release from prison. Performing a concert with his old band is the only way he can get enough money to save the home where he and Elwood were raised; the Catholic Home for Orphans. The Blues Brothers were first seen on a Saturday Night Live sketch. For the Blues Brothers movie, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi’s roles were greatly expanded and enhanced. The Blues Brothers DVD not only allows me to re-live the films hysterical comic moments, but it let’s me enjoy the Blues Brothers awesome soundtrack over and over and over again! The supporting cast on the Blues Brothers DVD includes some fantastic singers. Performances by such musical greats like Ray Charles, James Brown, Cab Calloway, Aretha Franklin and others helped make both the Blues Brothers DVD and the Blues Brothers movie soundtrack best sellers.
Prior to the release of the Blues Brothers movie the band, fronted by John Belushi as lead vocalist and Aykroyd on vocals and mouth organ released an album entitled, Briefcase Full of Blues. The original Blues Brothers band members consisted of some very well known and talented musicians, including former Booker T and the Mgs guitarist Steve Cropper, as well as former Isaac Hayes (the Bar-Kays) drummer Willie Hall.
In 2005, the Blues Brothers 25th Anniversary Edition DVD was released to the public. The two included discs show both the original release and the directors cut which is the entire Blues Brother DVD prior to being cut by the editors. Directors cut DVD’s are what the film’s director would have wanted the movie to be. Directors cut DVD‘s can be up to an hour longer than the movie released to theaters and has many more scenes. The Blues Brothers Directors Cut DVD runs true to form and has many new scenes that have never been shown in the movie theaters. In this particular version of the Blues Brother DVD, Dan Aykroyd introduces the film and there is also a documentary about the making of the Blues Brother movie. As an added treat, they have added some concert footage of the Blues Brother Band performing at the House of Blues in San Diego, California. As if that wasn’t enough already, there is additional footage of impersonators singing songs from the Blues Brother movie. Back in 1998 there was yet another earlier release of the Blues Brothers DVD entitled the Collector's Edition which also contained a Blues Brothers Director's Cut DVD.
The Best of the Blues Brothers DVD contains some great footage of the band performing live on-stage as well as some hysterical performances of both Belushi and Aykroyd appearing on Saturday Night Live. The Blues Brothers DVD 2000 is in widescreen format and contains promotional posters, the Blues Brothers theatrical trailer, plus photographs of the cast from the Blues Brothers films set. The DVD also contains bonus footage on the making of the Blues Brothers movie.
