Bob Dylan CD - Praise For A Legend
My all time favorite musicians are singer songwriters, especially those musical artists who write brilliant lyrics. More often than not you can find a Bob Dylan CD on my player, both old and and releases. Some of Dylan's albums stand out over others, but I can listen to that gravelly voice and his powerful words full of metaphor all day long. If you were to take his music away, all of the songs would stand up as poems, holding their own with the poet greats.
Back in the turbulent 1960s, Bob Dylan was venerated as a protest singer, surprisingly, it was a label he didn't really care for. He refused to be to be hijacked as a spokesperson for any of the 60's movements and he didn't want to be boxed in for just any political cause. He identified more with wandering musicians such as Woody Guthrie and the hobos than with any political doctrine. Don't get me wrong, Dylan wrote some great political songs of course, songs like With God On My Side and Masters of War. Conversely, he is just as capable of writing and singing a tender love song like his hit songs, Lay Lady Lay and Just Like A Woman.
The singer/songwriter traveled to New York City early in his career and played in the Greenwich Village folk clubs. While performing in the Village he honed his skills as a musician and songwriter by drawing inspiration from his heroes that he met. The first Bob Dylan CD he made was released in 1962 by Columbia Records and was simply named Bob Dylan and that was all it took for the legend to be born. A lot of his best songs that he wrote were performed by others, including Mr. Tambourine Man, All I Really Want To Do and My Back Pages (The Byrds), Blowin' In The Wind, Too Much Of Nothing and Don't Think Twice It's All Right (Peter, Paul & Mary), All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix), All I Really Want To Do (Cher) and many more. His records like Rainy Day Woman and Like A Rolling Stone reached the pop charts and the world of Rock n' Roll was his.
Later in his career, Dylan would shock the folk music purists by performing on stage with an electric guitar. He wanted to develop his sound even further and soon produced his first plugged in Bob Dylan CD. This change in style would lose him some of his folk music fans, but he would also gain many new fans. Whatever his fans thought of his new musical style, his songs lyrics were just as good as before, sometimes savage and most often beautifully lyrical.
Most of my favorite Bob Dylan songs are ones that perfectly blend melody and lyrics into a sublime whole. Any best of Bob Dylan CD should include the songs It's Alright Ma, Boots of Spanish Leather, Gates of Eden and I'm only Bleeding. Dylan may have alienated some fans with his various phases of going in and out of style, but he remains one of music histories all time geniuses. Anybody that wants to listen to a Bob Dylan CD should listen to it properly, not as background music, but really listen to it. Dylan is a true poet and deserves our utmost respect. If there were a membership for those who are greater than the sum of their parts, then Bob Dylan the singer, the songwriter, the poet would be a member of that stellar few.
