Cary Grant Movies
by Neil Gerstein
Born on January 18, 1904 in Horfield, Bristol, U.K., Cary Grant, is much considered one of the greatest actors that Hollywood has ever seen. His original birth name was Archibald Alexander Leach. Although the dapper Cary Grant was both tall and very handsome, his charm and charisma were considered his finest attributes. Is there any wonder why everyone during that era wanted to be like one of Hollywood's most popular movie stars? Cary Grant came from an average lower middle class family. When Cary was only 9 years old, his mother was sent to a mental institution after she fell mentally ill, which made Cary's childhood to get even tougher. At the young age of fourteen, the future actor dropped out of school to join Bob Pender's troupe of comedians by lying about his age and forging his father's signature on the letter he submitted to join the comic troupe.
Cary Grant learned many useful skills during his time with the troupe including acrobatics and pantomime. Skills that he would utilize in his movie career. During his time with the Pender Troupe, Cary Grant would tour many English counties. It was during his time with the comic troupe that his Hollywood movie star destiny called him and he and seven other Pender Troupe boys were selected to go to the United States. Cary performed in the show called Good Times on Broadway, which ran for 456 good performances, which allowed Cary Grant (Alexander Leach) to show off his talents while he was getting used to the United States. It 1931, Cary left the Troupe and gave a screen test at Paramount Pictures. This is when Paramount Pictures had him change his name from Archibald Alexander Leach to the now famous movie star moniker, Cary Grant.
It was in 1932 when Cary Grant debuted in his first Hollywood movie called "This is the Night". After "This is the Night", Cary Grant was Mae West's automatic choice to co-star with Mae in her movies "I'm no Angel" and "She Done Him Wrong", both releasing in the year 1933. But it was in the year 1935 when Cary Grant's real break came to him in the movie "Sylvia Scarlett" with the actress Katharine Hepburn. Katharine Hepburn was to be Cary Grant's co-star in many of his forthcoming films. It was in the movie "Silvia Scarlett" that Cary Grant proved his mettle and was now looked at as an actor to look forward to and was labeled as the next great Hollywood movie star. In 1937, after his contract with Paramount Pictures came to an end, Cary Grant decided not to join any of Hollywood's big studio's, and work as an independent by choosing his own scripts to work for. This move would result in Cary Grant giving movie goers some of Hollywood's finest, funniest and most memorable movies ever made. Some of Cary Grant's most famous comedies were co-starred with none other than actress Katharine Hepburn. These great movies include "Holiday" and "Bringing up Baby", both released in the year 1938. Other great Carry Grant movies filmed during his independent years are: "My Favorite Wife" and "The Awful Truth" in the year 1940 with Iren Dunne; "Gunga Din in 1939 with Victor McLagen and Douglas Fairbanks Jr.; "His Girl Friday" in 1940 with Rosalind Russell and my personal favorite "The Philadelphia Story" in 1940 with the wonderful cast of Jimmy Stewart and Katharine Hepbum.
At the age of 62, Cary Grant would retire from movies to take on his newest and biggest role of a father. Cary Grant's married life could be defined as nothing other than "rocky". Cary was married five times with all but his last marriage ending in divorce. He was survived by his fifth wife after his death in 1986. Cary Grant had only 1 child, a daughter from his fourth wife, the lovely actress, Dyan Cannon. There were many people who accused Carry Grant of being homosexual because of the very close friendship he had with another great Hollywood actor, Randolph Scott. These accusations were never proved and according to some of the people who were very close to him, say that Cary's relationship with Randolf Scott was nothing more than being brotherly and thus should not be accussed as anything but friendship. Cary Grant was nominated twice for the Academy Awards "best actor" but never won the Oscar. But, in 1969 he was honored by Academy Awards committee with a special "Lifetime Achievement" Oscar. On November 29, 1986 Cary Grant died due to a stroke leaving behind a legacy of well acted comedy movies for coming generations to laugh at and enjoy. Cary Grant was recently ranked the 7th most popular movie stars of all time by The Empire Magazine of U.K. , an honor which he truly deserves. Anybody up for watching "Arsenic and Old Lace"?
