Facts About Cats The Musical
Who is better than Andrew Lloyd Webber at picking an out of the ordinary topic and making it into a hit production? After reading the poems in T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, he became inspired and wrote the music for Cats the Musical. The award winning musical has been seen by record audiences all across the globe and has been performed in over twenty different languages.
The show first debuted in 1981, in London's West End. Cats could be seen on the West End until 2002 when it finally closed. In New York City, the critically acclaimed Broadway production began its run in 1982 and played until 2000 when it had its final performance. Cats the musical held the record as the worlds longest running musical show until 2006 when Les Miserables took those honors away from Cats. Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to produce a video version of the musical which he did in 1998. The Cats musical video features Elaine Paige, who had previously starred in the London's West End show of Cats. Also starring in the Cats musical video is veteran actor, Sir John Mills.

In addition to Elaine Paige, the original London cast included singing sensation Sarah Brightman, Paul Nicholas and Wayne Sleep. The cast members of the first Broadway shows included Kenneth Ard, Betty Buckley, Ken Page and Bonnie Simmons. Cats the musical has been applauded wherever it has toured. The story seems not only universal, but relevant to all of the world's cultures. The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical has been performed in Tokyo, Vienna, Brisbane, Mexico City and other cities including China.
Along with becoming the worlds longest running musical show, Cats has received acclaim from awards organizations and critics around the world. It has won multiple Tony Awards in the US in 1983, including Best Musical and Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Direction of a Musical. In the UK, the Lawrence Olivier Awards are considered the most prestigious stage awards and in 1981 the show won the Lawrence Olivier Awards Best Musical.
Songs Found On Cats The Musical Movie Soundtrack
Along with catchy Cats songs like Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats, The Naming of Cats, The Rum Tum Tugger, The Naming of Cats, Grizabella: The Glamour Cat, Mongojerrie and Rumpleteazer, Old Deuteronomy, The Jellicle Ball, Gus: The Theater Cat, Shimbleshanks: The Railway Cat, Macavity: The Mystery Cat, Mr. Mistoffelees and of course Memory, the production is visually magnificent. The cats in the show have such fantastic names, like Rum Tum Tugger, Growltiger, Grizabella, Shimbleshanks, Macavity, Rumpleteazer, Mongojerrie, Mr. Mistoffelees and Old Deuteronomy. Lloyd Webber had remembered T.S Eliot's poems from Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats as childhood favorites and enjoyed setting them to music. Valerie Eliot, T.S Eliot's widow, encouraged Webber and went so far as to allowed him access to some of T.S Eliot's unpublished poems. Poems that never found their way into his original book.
The massive success and appeal of Cats the musical has produced an array of Cats the musical merchandise for fans to enjoy. The famous Cats the musical logo which is gold colored cat's eyes up against a pitch black background is very popular along with lapel pins, adorns t-shirts and t-shirts showing a photograph of the stage production. Also for sale is a Jemima musical trinket box as well as a CD containing the Cats musical score and printed out lyrics. The Cats musical video's are a real fan favorite. Until next time: Meow!
