Our fondest memories are closely tied to songs we grew up listening to. And for most people, some of our most inspirational and powerful feelings come from warm memory of listening to Christmas music either on the radio or on our record and CD players during the holiday season. For me, nothing stirs up my emotions more than listening to the sweet vocals of Johnny Mathis singing his renditions of our favorite Christmas songs. In today's hustle and bustle lifestyle, it seems we no longer have enough time to spend with family and friends except for one magical time of year; Christmas.

As children, Christmas music means sitting around the Christmas tree with our family, opening gifts with hopes of getting their favorite toys. As adults, Christmas music means family and friends getting together, some of who we have not see since last Christmas. It also means eating delicious foods and the unselfish joy you feel in giving gifts to the people you care about most in the world. What helps to make all of this very special are the sounds of Christmas music playing in the background.

Christmas songs from Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" and Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song" all the way through to Wham's "Last Christmas" and Bruce Springsteen's "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" all hold special memories for me. Christmas music is a valuable part of this well-loved time of year. Other religions holiday songs can evoke many of the same emotions and fond memories like Adam Sandler's "The Chanukah Song" I and II. There are animated and puppet characters that can trigger my holiday memories and emotions as well as any song artist. Directly after the Thanksgiving holiday you can count on The Chipmunks "Chipmunk Song", Snoopy vs. The Red Baron, Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer, The Muppets "We Wish You A Merry Christmas", Frosty The Snowman and everyone's favorite green guy "Your A Mean One Mr. Grinch" to take us through the holiday's singing their wonderful Christmas music.

It's important to make sure that you keep the wonderful tradition of sharing Christmas music during your holiday celebrations. Sadly, this seems to be a dying practice among many families in recent years. Last year, we celebrated Christmas at my cousins house. She had all of the makings of a joyful holiday celebration except for one important element that was missing; no Christmas music.

While the Christmas tree was decorated to the finest detail and the lights were sparkling with charm, the absence of Christmas music was quite pronounced. She had made several of our favorite holiday dishes and the gathering was nearly perfect but there was definitely something missing. There wasn't any of my favorite Christmas tunes playing in the background.

It took awhile for my wife and I to realize why my cousins Christmas party didn't feel right. There was good food and even better company. The Christmas decorations were beautiful and everyone was enjoying sharing their life stories while we all watched the kids open their Christmas presents with glee. However, we left with an empty feeling that couldn’t be explained. All we did know was, Christmas at my cousin's was less than memorable.

For the better part of the evening all of the guests seemed to wandered around. Most of the kids played video games while the remainder of us watched "A Christmas Story" on the television. The occasional conversation was interrupted with commercials and some channel surfing. We hadn’t realized that the total absence of Christmas music was a major factor in these distractions.

We thought that the new tradition of going to my cousin's home for the holidays was the reason that we were feeling a little deflated. After all, we had gone to her parents’ home for years and years. But her parents were in attendance and they seemed a little let down, too. No one could put a finger on why there was the odd feeling that something very important was missing.

It wasn’t until I went to another holiday affair that I realized what the significant difference between the events really was. There was no Christmas music. The absence of the holiday songs may not seem like a big deal but it makes a huge difference. The other celebration was warm and inviting and the Christmas music helped create an atmosphere fit for a grand event.

In the future, if you are planning a Christmas party to share with friends, family and loved ones, do everyone a giant favor and turn the television off for awhile. Play some lovely Christmas music instead. You will see what a difference Christmas songs really do make. I promise you, your Christmas events will be much more memorable when everyone's favorite Christmas music is part of the entertainment.
