The Script For Grease The Musical
Writing a hit musical is something of a challenge, especially one that's going to endure through the years. Grease the musical is one such production, popular for its catchy songs and entertaining characters. The script for Grease the musical was written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. They set the story in 1959 Chicago and wrote rock and roll numbers that had people dancing in the movie theater aisles. In fact, many people can still remember the great songs from Grease the musical and still sing along to Summer Nights, Greased Lightning, Hopelessly Devoted to You, and You're the One That I Want when they hear the songs on the DVD or radio.
Summer Nights With John Travolta And Olivia Newton-John
Grease the musical begins on a Southern California beach during summer vacation. That is where Danny Zuko (John Travolta) meets the lovely and innocent Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) from Australia. Summer quickly ends along with their very brief, but passionate summertime romance. It's time to head for home and for Zuko and Sandy part ways for good; or so they believe. Now back in school, Sandy and Zuko reminisce and exaggerate their summer romance with the great Grease song, Summer Nights.
The Cast Members Of Grease The Musical
Grease the musical takes us back to high school, Rydell High School in Chicago to be exact, where we meet the leather jacketed T-Birds, an inept gang of greasers led by John Travolta and Jeff Conway (Kenickie). We also meet the Pink Ladies, an all girl Gang whose members where pink satin jackets and rule the roost at Rydell High. The leader of the Pink Ladies is Rizzo (Stockard Channing) who once dated Danny Zuko and has an earth shaking surprise in store for John Travolta's character.
Grease The Broadway Musical
The Broadway musical was an instant fan favorite, so much so that the hit show was listed in the record books as the longest running Broadway musical up until A Chorus Line grabbed the honors as longest running musical on Broadway. Grease the musical's Broadway debut was in 1972 which starred Barry Bostwick as Danny. The beautiful and innocent Sandy was played by Carole Demas. The following year, Grease the musical would open in the London West End. The show starred a relative unknown named Richard Gere to play Danny. Playing along side Richard Gere as Sandy was Elaine Paige, who would later become well known for her role in Cats the Musical as well as other Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals. Both the Broadway version of Grease as well as the London West End version of Grease have enjoyed triumphant revivals along with touring in the United States and in Asia very successfully.
The Movie Stars Of Grease The Musical
The musical Grease has given a boost to the careers of many fledgling stars, who would eventually go on to become household names. Among the many stars who have had parts in Grease the musical have been Patrick Swayze, Marilu Henner, Peter Gallagher, Brooke Shields and Treat Williams. It was said, that when they decided to put Grease the musical on the Hollywood big screen, the producers Allan Carr and Robert Stigwood of Paramount Pictures wanted completely new faces for the movie, but ended up with a large percentage of the films cast coming from previous stage productions of Grease, such as John Travolta who once played the part of Doody.
Grease Opens In Movie Theaters
in 1978, when the first Grease musical opened in movie theaters it became a smash hit. Grease the Broadway musical had finally made it to the big screen. All the liveliness and excitement that was seen in the stage version of Grease the musical was caught on camera for the film. The electricity between John Travolta's (Danny Zuko) and Olivia Newton-John's (Sandy Olsson) was marvelous to behold. The supporting cast members of Stockyard Channing (Betty Rizzo), Jeff Conaway (Kenickie), Michael Tucci (Sonny), Kelly Ward (Putzie), Barry Pearl (Doodie), Jamie Donnelly (Jan), Didi Conn (Frenchy), Dinah Manoff (Marty Maraschino), Joan Blondell (Vi), Ed Byrnes (Vince Fontaine), Eve Arden (Principal McGee), Alice Ghostley (Mrs. Murdock), Dody Goodman (Blanche), Susan Buckner (Patty Simcox), Lorenzo Lamas (Tom Chisum), Fannie Flagg (Nurse Wilkins), Dick Patterson (Mr. Rudie), Eddie Deezen (Eugene Felnic), Darrell Zwerling (Mr. Lynch), Ellen Travolta (Waitress), Anette Charles (Cha Cha DiGregorio), Dennis Stewart (Leo aka "Crater Face" - Scorpions), Frankie Avalon (The Teen Angel), Sid Caesar (Coach Calhoun) and Sha-Na-Na (Johnny Casino & The Gamblers) were a major reason why Grease the Musical was a smashing success and a classic.
Grease 2 The Musical Bust
A sequel to the musical Grease was released in 1982. It also was set in Rydell but with different characters. It starred Michelle Pfeiffer, Lorna Luft and Maxwell Caulfield. Grease 2 paled in comparison to the original with the musical numbers sounding as if they were written by Rydell's 4th grade music class. It was so bad I'm surprised Michelle Pfeiffer isn't suing to remove her name from the credits. Trust me on this! Only watch the original movie of Grease the Musical.
