Hip hop came onto the scene in the 70's and brought with it a smile to the listener's faces and made their heads nod to the music. The beats and lyrics that were included in hip hop music were second to none. To begin with Hip Hop reflected the despair that the African Americans were experiencing, but it gradually became a tool for expressing dissatisfaction. Hip Hop also puts across the message of being against gang fighting or creating awareness against fatal diseases.
Afrika Bambaataa is a DJ and community leader from the South Bronx. He was the artist who created hip hop music and the well-known group called ‘Zulu Nation’. ‘Planet Rock' was their most famous song which came from the album also named ‘Planet Rock'. This is the best example of how hip hop promoted unity amongst the younger generation.

Hip hop began to change as time went on. Then along came the first female hip hop group TLC. Their songs had original hip hop sounds, and they gradually began to blend in other sounds also. TLC reached a more vast audience compared to Afrika Bambaataa. Therefore, hip hop was introduced into the music industry and became commercialized.
TLC's all time favorite song ‘Waterfalls', which was composed by the girls, received worldwide popularity and entered the hip hop music charts in 1995. This single was at the top of the charts for several weeks. Modern day was depicted in the song ‘Waterfalls' and it created awareness of the issues that were faced by youngsters such as guns, drugs, aids and crimes that young people were susceptible to. This song tried to help overcome these problems.

Afrika Bambaataa ‘Planet Rock’
