How To Repair A Wet Cell Phone
Have you ever jumped into a lake or a pool and then realize all too late that you still had your cell phone in your pocket? No, you are not an idiot and you are not alone. In fact, thousands of people type in “How can I fix my cell phone - it got wet” into the search engines each and every month.
Over the years cell phone designs have gotten so much smaller and so much thinner that it’s amazing that there aren’t more incidents of cell phones getting wet in swimming pools, lakes, oceans and washing machines. If you are among the unfortunate people whose cell phone has gotten wet, don’t despair, there maybe something that you can do to reverse the damage.
1. Remove the cell phones battery. Attempting to power up your cell phone while it is still wet may cause further and even irreparable damage. Do Not turn your cell phone on while it is wet!
2. Now that the battery has been removed you will need to dry your cell phone out. If you were unfortunate to drop your phone in salt water or liquid other than water, then to remove contaminants that will damage your mobile phone in the future, you will need to rinse your you cell phone out first in a solution of distilled water or methyl alcohol prior to drying it out. See below for different methods to dry your cell phone out.
3. Once your cell phone is dried out, return the now dry battery but do not power it up yet. If you have a new battery even better, use that. Prior to powering up your now dry cell phone, go ahead and give it a full charge on the phones charger. Once charged you are now ready to power your cell phone up.
Here is a list of several methods you can use to dry your wet cell phone out:
A. Air Dry - Allowing your wet cell phone to dry out over a period of a few days is probably the safest method to use overall although it does mean you won’t have the use of your phone while it is drying out. You can help speed up the process by placing it on top of a low heat source like your cable box or television set. Just make sure to place a paper towel underneath your phone.
B. Use Of Desiccative Materials - This is my favorite method to use and has been used with great success by a lot of people who asked the question “How can I fix my cell phone - it got wet”. Here’s what to do:
Place your wet cell phone into a bowl full of uncooked dry rice. As uncooked dry rice is very absorbent, it will speed up the process of drying out your mobile phone by quite a bit.
You can use other desiccating materials like cat litter or silica sand, but uncooked dry rice is your best material because you don’t have to worry about the rice getting inside of your cell phone and causing damage. If you do use cat litter or silica sand, please place your wet cell phone inside some pantyhose to prevent damage.
Here are a couple of different video demonstrations to show you how it is done.
C. Compressed Air Cans - For faster drying, you can use compressed air cans to speed up the process. I’m talking about the compressed air cans used to clean dust from personal computers and other electronic equipment. To prevent freezing damage, just make sure you follow the same safe procedure for drying your mobile phone as you would in dusting your equipment. Hold the air can up straight, use short spurts of air and don’t hold it too close to the electronic equipment.
D. Hair Dryers - Another method that has worked for some people is to dry their wet cell phone with a hair dryer. Just remember to use the lowest heat setting, don’t let the hot nozzle get too close to your phone and keep the airflow moving in a side-to-side motion to avoid heat damage. Dry your cell phone like you were drying your hair.
Once you are sure your cell phone is completely dried out after using any of these methods, go to step #3 above. If after applying these methods you fail to fix your wet cell phone then I’m afraid it is time to get a new phone. Don’t throw your old cell phone out just yet, because you may be able to use it for trade on your new one.
I hope these methods help. You may want to print them out for the next time you or someone you know jumps in the pool and yells: “How can I fix my cell phone - it got wet”
