In the history of Hollywood has there ever been, nor will there ever be a movie made with such a huge cast of well known celebrities (mostly comedians) like there was in Stanley Kramer's 1963 wacky comedy classic "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World". This 3+ hour slapstick chase film is loaded with non-stop high-speed car chases, car crashes, airplane rides, biking accidents, funny fights, building demolition, treasure hunting, mother-in-law arguments, classic one-liners and cameo appearences. "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" is entertaining from beginning to end and is just as funny and enjoyable everytime I watch this comic event, which for me has been over a dozen times.
The cast in "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" includes such famous and well known celebrities like Spencer Tracey, Milton Berle, Jonathan Winters, Mickey Rooney, Phil Silvers, Dorothy Provine, Buddy Hackett, Sid Caesar, Ethel Merman, Terry-Thomas, Edie Adams, Peter Falk, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Jim Backus, Jimmy Durante, Dick Shawn, Paul Ford, William Demarest and countless others. The cameo appearence list in "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" is just as strong with names like Jack Benny, Jerry Lewis, The Three Stooges, Stan Laurel, Andy Devine, Leo Gorcey, Buster Keaton, Don Knotts, Norman Fell, Joe E. Brown, Carl Reiner along with a multitude of others.
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World's plot is about a number of motorists who happen to witness a motor vehicle accident on a coastal California highway that is full of twists and turns. The victim in the crash is an ex-convict by the name of "Smiler" Grogan (Jimmy Durante). Several of the motorists who witnessed the accident climb down the cliff in an attempt to rescue "Smiler" but nothing can be done to save the ex-bank robber. With his last words, "Smiler" tells the group of rescuers where he has hidden a fortune in stolen bank loot. He tells them the name of the state park where it is, and that it is buried under a "giant W". At first the group tries to workout a fair way to split-up the money, but when greed takes over and they fail to come up with an agreeable solution, it's every man and woman for themselves, thus sending the group of drivers on an all out, anything goes, high-speed race and chase to see who can make it to the stolen bank loot first!
Unbeknownst to the treasure hunters, Captain Culpepper (Spencer Tracy) a detective on the Santa Rosita Police Department has been following "Smiler" Grogan in hopes that he would lead the police to the stolen money. When he learns of the fatal car crash he orders an all points watch on the group of unsuspecting treasure hunters. The chase is on!
