There is no point in beginning a course in learning how to play piano if you will run out of money half way through the piano lessons. Talk to possible piano instructors about their teaching methods and ask questions about things you are uncertain or uncomfortable about.

In your piano lessons, what type and genre of music do you teach?

Do you offer group piano lessons?

What other elements are part of your piano course?

Do you require your piano students to perform in studio recitals during any part of the program?

Do you offer other live performance opportunities for your students who are learning how to play the piano, such as music competitions and/or music festivals?

Do you use any kinds of advanced technology in your music studio, such as digital keyboards, online piano lessons, computers or piano instruction software that teaches students to learn how to play piano online?

How much practice time on the piano do you require of your students on a daily basis?

When it comes to learning how to play piano, what exactly do you expect of your students?

Your piano teacher must not only teach you how to play the piano, you must also be taught about different playing styles, the theory of music, how to improvise and a plethora of other piano knowledge. All of this additional knowledge are things that help you to become a much better piano player.

When you learn how to play the piano under the professional tutelage of a private piano teacher, it is much like going back to school. Besides the homework your private piano instructor will give you, you need to be prepared to work on your piano lessons on your own as well as practice beyond what is required. This is the kind of passion and interest that will transform you from a beginning pianist to a really good or even master pianist.

Conversely, do not make the mistake of thinking that practicing piano for 5 hours or more a day will turn you into a great pianist in a shorter period of time.
