Michael Jackson's Top Songs
Michael Jackson: A Brief Biography

The seventh child of nine children, Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana. They were three sisters and six brothers - La-Toya, Janet, Rebbie, Sigmund, Toriano, Jermaine, Marlon, Steven and of course Michael. At the age of five, Michael Jackson began his illustrious career as the lead singer of the Jackson 5. The other 4 members of the Jackson 5 were his brothers Jermaine, Tito, Jackie and Marlon.

In the beginning, The Jackson 5 performed at local clubs and parties as well as entering competitions which gave them exposure and allowed them to grow together as a band. It was in 1968 when the Jackson 5 would get their big first big break. Berry Gordy of Motown Records heard about the Jackson 5 from Bobby Taylor and The Vancouvers and granted the band an audition. After the audition, Motown Records signed them right then and there and moved the group to California. It didn't take long for Michael Jackson and his brothers to start producing hit records. Among their first few singles which became huge hits in the U.S. were "I'll Be There", "I Want You Back" and "The Love You Save".

The Jackson 5 would make fourteen albums with Berry Gordy and Motown Records up until 1976 with Michael Jackson recording four other solo albums. The Jackson 5 was the first band in American history to have their first four hits make it to the top of the American music charts. The four hits were: "I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love You Save" and "I'll Be There".

After Motown, the group would sign up with Epic Records, but because Motown copyrighted the Jackson 5 name, Jermaine, Tito, Jackie, Marlon and Michael Jackson would change their group name to The Jacksons. As The Jacksons they would make a total of six albums under the Epic Record label until 1984. During this period they made many great hit singles including "Enjoy Yourself", "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" and "State of Shock" plus a platinum album "Destiny". After the disappointing 1989 release of their "2300 Jackson Street" album in which Michael Jackson was only involved in the title track the group was dropped by Epic Records and all but disappeared, although they never officially announced a break-up.

Aside from The Jacksons, Michael Jackson kept busy as a solo performer. In 1978 Michael Jackson would meet song producer Quincy Jones on the sets of "The Wiz", which was Michael's film debut. He played the role of the "Scarecrow" alongside Diana Ross who starred as "Dorothy". During "The Wiz", Quincy Jones agreed to produce Michael Jackson's next solo album. So in 1979, Michael made "Off The Wall" along with producer Quincy Jones. It was the first album to have four top 10 hits including the Michael Jackson songs "Rock With You" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough". While making "Off The Wall", Michael broke his nose performing a complex dance number. This would lead him to the doctor who would begin altering Michael Jackson's appearance.

In November of 1982, "Thriller" the number one selling album of all time was released. "Thriller" had some of the most popular Michael Jackson songs like "Billy Jean", "Thriller", "Beat It" and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin" along with several other big hits of the album. Over 109 million copies of Michael Jackson's epic album have been sold throughout the world.

Michael Jackson set great store on his music videos. He looked at them as if they were short films of his music and he only wanted the best film and video directors and producers to work with. He often used the latest in special effects and technologies when filming them. An excellent example of his profound use of special effects in his music video's can be found in his hit song Billie Jean. In the music video for "Thriller" it was superb choreography along with detailed make-up that made Michael Jackson's fourteen minute long video a masterpiece. This short film or long music video helped skyrocket the sales of "Thriller" as it became the world's biggest selling musical/home video.

In 1984, Michael Jackson's trademark moonwalk was performed and seen by the world for the first time. Michael Jackson would break all records by winning eight Grammies in one night for the narrative work he did on ET Storybook and his "Thriller" album. On December 9, 1984 Michael would announce to the world that he was splitting with The Jacksons after his last concert of The Jackson's Victory tour.

In 1987 Michael Jackson released his "Bad" album which spawned seven more Michael Jackson hit songs including "Bad", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Man in the Mirror", "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" and "Dirty Diana". Then in 1987 Michael would write his autobiography which delved deeply into his personal life and singing career. In 1989 Elizabeth Taylor dubbed Michael Jackson as the true "King of Pop, Rock and Soul" as she gave him his award as the Artist of the Decade for his monster albums "Bad" and "Thriller".

In 1991 in collaboration with Sony Music, Michael Jackson released his fourth album "Dangerous" with "Black or White" his biggest hit and "Remember the Time" also in the top five on the record charts. In 1987 he had his first solo world tour and in 1992 he took off for his "Dangerous World Tour". His song "Heal the World" won the hearts of many and was forever written on the pages of history. In the same year he started Heal the World Foundation for orphaned and the homeless children of the world. All profits from his world tour concerts went to his Heal the World Foundation.

1993 to 1994 would be a rough period in Michael Jackson's life. He would reveal to the world on the Oprah Winfrey Show that he was physically abused by his father Joseph. Michael himself would be accused of sexually abusing a child and Michael would become addicted to prescription drugs.

Some say Michael Jackson's marriage to Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of the legendry Elvis Presley was a publicity stunt. Their marriage lasted for less than two years ending in divorce in 1996. In 1995 Michael would begin a world tour to promote his fifth album "History". The world tour would last for two years. Michael Jackson would meet his second wife, Debbie Rowe, while getting treatment for skin disorder. She was working as a nurse for the doctor who treated him. On February 13, 1997 they had a child who they named Prince Michael Joseph Jackson Jr. On April 3, 1998 Michael and Debbie would be gifted with a daughter, Paris Michael Katherine Jackson.

In 1997, Michael Jackson would release his sixth solo album called "Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix" which consisted of remixed hits along with five new songs. To promote his latest album, Michael would make a 38 minute short film called Ghost, in which he portrayed five different characters. In a concert in New York, Michael Jackson would reunite with his brothers from The Jacksons to celebrate his thirteenth anniversary as a solo artist. Among the superstars who performed with him that day were Usher, Destiny's Child, Whitney Houston, 'N Sync, Shaggy and many others. In 2001, Michael Jackson released the album "Invincible" which spawned hit songs like "You Rock My World", "Butterflies" and "Cry".

In 2003, Michael Jackson would again be accused of child abuse charges and after many months of stress he would finally be found not guilty in a California court in 2005. During the 5 month trial Michael Jackson suffered from severe weight loss and stress-related illnesses. After the trial Michael Jackson moved to Bahrain in the Middle East with his brother Jermaine to get far away from hounding reporters and the court of the public opinion.

On June 25, 2009, just as the fifty year old "King of Pop" seemed to be making a comeback with a 50 concert world tour, Michael Jackson died from what appeared to be cardiac arrest at his rented mansion in Los Angeles, California. Today the world morns. There will never be another "King of Pop". There is a rumor that there are Michael Jackson songs that have never been released. We can only hope to hear them, but without Michael performing them it wouldn't be the same.
