The Next New TV Shows

New TV shows that attain cult status because they are both different and good do not come along very often. Most new TV shows, be it drama or comedy seem to use the same formula or cookie cutter mold. That is probably the main reason why any new TV show that is considered to be weird and unusual achieves cult status. Twin Peaks, Heroes and Lost are three perfect examples of television shows that broke the typical cookie cutter mold of the usual cop or hospital show to become fan favorites as well as become the most popular TV show downloads on the Internet. TV viewers are always on the lookout for a new television show that sends them tumbling to the floor with laughter or something different that keeps them on the edge of their seat. An enormous amount of time and energy as well as money is spent on launching any new TV show and the competition between all of the networks has never been more intense.

The majority of new TV shows never get any further than the pilot show if they make it that far. If the shows storyline isn't considered popular, then it will be dropped instantaneously. The networks use audience panels to get their research into what will be popular or unpopular. Oftentimes, the pilot will never even be shown. When a new TV show is a smash hit, competing networks will attempt to copy the formula used by the successful show, but more times than not, they fail miserably and may even destroy the popularity of the show they tried to copy. That is what happened to the prime time game show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" Now, with the emergence of cable TV and all of its networks, there is a constant need for new TV shows to fill all of the time slots.

The overabundance of reality shows does not seem to be going anywhere - I'm afraid it's here to stay. They have three things going for them that guarantees longevity: They are still very popular, they have viewers who watch them regularly and they are quite inexpensive to make. Even controversial reality shows like the UK version of Big Brother, which has endured excessive drinking, racist remarks and threats of violence doesn't keep them off the air. Besides reality TV, new game shows also seem to be a favorite of the networks.

In today's crowded market, New TV shows that are released for public consumption are expected to hook the audience right away. It's always a struggle to think of something original, something fresh, and not every writer is gifted enough to come up with a show like Heroes or Lost. The problem is one that is only going to get worse. The Producers want to see a quick return for the money they have invested and might not have the patience to wait to see if a new TV show is going to build momentum. If that attitude was taken with Star Trek when it was a new TV show, the world would have missed out on something very special.

As far as American situation comedy is concerned, the last ten years or so are now being referred to as the golden age in television comedy. Sitcoms like Will and Grace, Friends and Frasier all became international hits and their passing has left a big hole that won't be filled anytime in the foreseeable future. Now with the sitcoms King of Queens and Everyone Loves Raymond also at an end, the search for good new TV shows in the situational comedy field are in crisis mode. All the above sitcoms are class acts to follow and every new sitcom that comes out will inevitably be compared to them. The television industry waits for the next golden age of comedy, frantically scanning sitcom scripts for that next big hit. As are we, the television viewing audience.
